The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
